Pelosi Tells the White House to Go Pound Sand
But is she really putting her speakership at risk, as Redstate’s post Speaker Pelosi Stands Firm on the Public Option, Essentially Tells the White House to Go Pound Sand asserts?
That moment in The Great Obamacare War arrived yesterday, when the Speaker of the House stood firm on the public option, essentially telling the White House to go pound sand.
In effect, Speaker Pelosi just called in an air-strike on her own position.
This is not going to be pretty.
It will likely cost her the Speakership. After the 2010 elections.
At first blush it seems odd that a Speaker and President from the same party would be at odds. Obama’s laid-back, outsourced management style and Pelosi’s territoriality partially create the problem. According to Newsweek the relationship between them has been testy from the start:
Obama naturally believes that after winning an arduous campaign, he’s earned the right to run the show. But Pelosi worked just as hard to get her job. A sharp-elbowed San Francisco multimillionaire who battled her way to the top of a club still dominated by men, she has no intention of being Obama’s gofer.
Given her district and base of contributors the Speaker can appear to defy the President and be for a public option, even if she knows its chances are slim. This guarantees that her seat is safe, even in 2010, so is her Speakership at risk? There will be some loss of democratic seats in the House after the 2010 elections, but if the recovery continues slowly and a watered down health care bill without a public option passes then it will probably remain democratic, if only by a thin margin. Barring some unforeseen disgrace the remaining Democrats wouldn’t dare to elect anyone other than Pelosi as Speaker.
